Situation

ABC is a leading manufacturer of transformers & switchgear in Middle East. The company is a big believer in Lean & continuous improvement methods. They recently embarked in a Lean BI system to help capture & report key performance indicators in a timely manner.

Actions taken

The project covered diagnosing the current state, identifying and capturing key performance indicators across the value chain and implementing a simple and usable daily dashboard system to ensure timely & reliable capturing of information to trigger management actions.

Results

The project helped identify and capture KPIs in a timely manner. This helped to build a culture of accountability in the company wherein all the stakeholders were aware and accountable for performance. This also helped trigger timely management actions, which contributed to improving the overall performance of the company.

A core team of change agents was constituted. The team was trained on Lean fundamentals and exposed to practical application of these tools. The value stream mapping exercise revealed several critical control points across the value chain that needed to be measured and reported on an ongoing basis. The team short-listed the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that most impacted productivity, quality, project timeliness, and asset utilisation.

The list of prioritised KPIs was then translated into a data capturing dashboard. The team started collecting live data using basic Excel templates and started reporting the KPIs on a daily basis. Once the team gained proficiency with the process, the IT team was on-boarded in order to translate the dashboard reporting into their existing ERP system to make it real-time and easy to report.
